The Christmas season in Puerto Vallarta is full of magic and cultural tradition, including the annual December pilgrimages down our cobblestone streets in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe. A tradition since 1921 in our city, this is a pinnacle point of holiday celebrations each year.
The Virgin of Guadalupe is a revered figure in Mexican Catholic culture, her image appearing on the clock of Juan Diego on December 12th, 1531, to restore his faith, accounting to legend. Hence, each day of the first 12 days of December, processions come to downtown Puerto Vallarta…. school groups, workers unions, civil associations….to the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Starting in the late afternoons and winding along Calle Juarez, the streets are filled with vendors selling traditional foods all the way to Plaza de Armas next to the Puerto Vallarta Malecon, which is filled with food stands and music every night of the week.
It is a wonderful time to witness one of the most special cultural traditions in Mexico, but if you live in Puerto Vallarta, plan accordingly for road closures, traffic and limited parking availability during these first 12 day of December and consider taking public transit or allowing extra time in your travels.
