Although almost all the rest of North America set their clocks ahead one hour back on March 11th, daylight saving time doesn’t start in Mexico until Sunday, April 1st, 2018, so you will want to adjust your clocks in your Puerto Vallarta condo or home. Here are a few daylight savings facts you may not know:
• Daylight savings time was first suggested as a jest in a satirical essay penned by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, but the idea is widely credited to a New Zealand entomologist who was irritated by how early the sunset when he was doing his evening bug collecting in 1895.
• Some border towns in Mexico, like Tijuana and Reynosa, change their clocks on the American schedule, to aid in trade and business with the USA.
• Hawaii and most of Arizona are the only two States that don’t use daylight saving time. In Canada, most of Saskatchewan and some parts of Quebec and British Columba don’t change their clocks either.
• Daylight saving wasofficially adopted in Mexico in 1996 because of increasing trade ties to the USA.
• Until 2010, Riviera Nayarit (Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerias, Sayulita, Punta Mita) was one hour earlier than the time in Puerto Vallarta, meaning that locals would commonly ask “Vallarta time or Nuevo time?” about appointments. On April 4th, 2010, the State of Nayarit changed their clocks to coincide with our clocks here in Jalisco, helping to end a lot of confusion.
This Saturday night, before going to bed in your Puerto Vallarta or Nuevo Vallarta home, remember to set the clocks ahead.
